Michael Giltz: Theater: New Play “Cock” Not As Provocative As Title, Sad To Say

COCK ** 1/2 out of ****
THE DUKE ON 42ND STREET

Do you want to see Cock? Did you like Cock? Is Cock worth paying for? If nothing else, the new play by Mike Bartlett (the acclaimed Earthquakes in London) provides some juvenile fun for theatergoers. Unfortunately, the play is not nearly as provocative as its title, a title it never comes close to needing or earning.

The story is a flip on an old tale. Instead of a man leaving his wife for another man, it’s about John (Cory Michael Smith), a gay man in a long-term relationship who suddenly finds himself attracted to a woman for the very first time. John can’t decide who to choose (or even who he is, really — gay, straight, bi, committed, philandering?) and it all climaxes in a very awkward dinner party. John’s boyfriend (Jason Butler Harner) believes John is going to tell the woman that it’s all over. Nonetheless, the boyfriend invites his father (Cotter Smith) to join them for moral support. The woman (Amanda Quaid) naturally believes John is going to end it with his partner and announce his love for her. John dithers and they realize he has absolutely no idea what he wants or needs. Neither do we and, unfortunately, Bartlett’s play never makes us care very much either way

It’s a smoothly entertaining piece nonetheless, with director James Macdonald handling the showdowns between actors quite nicely. The scenic and costume design is by Miriam Buether, who has built a circular boxing ring, with seating in the round on raised platforms that let the audience sit in judgement or perhaps cheer on their favorite protagonist a la a sporting event. There are no props, with actors simply offering to take someone’s coat or pour them a drink without actually bothering to do the deed. It keeps the focus squarely on the real action, the battle for John to figure out exactly what he wants.

The constant squaring off works nicely, with a seduction scene being a real highlight. John and the woman circle each other while verbally working their way towards coitus in a bit of gamesmanship that is sexy and amusing at the same time. (It helps that Smith and Quaid have the best chemistry).

So what goes wrong? First, Harner gives a mannered performance, with all his lines delivered in quotes. He’s always quoting “dialogue” instead of just speaking. That alone throws the play out of whack. If we don’t like the boyfriend, we can’t feel a great amount of tension about whether or not they stay together. Plus, it soon becomes clear that John is not happy in their relationship. He claims, at least, that his boyfriend is patronizing and makes him feel small and not terribly bright. Maybe none of this is true; maybe he’s just besotted with the new. But John’s indecisiveness is unappealing and he makes their relationship seem poor. So maybe he’s not bisexual and maybe he’s just using this woman as an excuse to fantasize about a happier life but if we don’t think the boyfriend is worth being with we can’t feel terribly much is at stake.

Quaid gives the most convincing performance, though her big breakdown at the end doesn’t quite deliver. Smith is better than his character, a frustrating fellow that doesn’t know what he wants. Insecurity can be charming, at least that’s what Albert Brooks wanted us to believe once upon a time. But indecision palls, even in a brisk 90 minute play. Smith does able supporting work as the loving and accepting father. It all deflates into a very unsatisfying resolution that leaves us pretty much where we started except for a would-be haunting last line that instead just annoys.

Then there’s the title. If you introduce a gun in act one, by golly you better fire it off in act three. And if you call your play Cock, it better be a button-pushing bit of provocation that toys with gender and sexuality in ways both funny and shocking. We keep waiting, not unreasonably, for Cock’s big moment, a soliloquy to sex, a panegyric to the penis, a colloquy on cock. And what do we get? Nothing. You walk out of the play without a clue as to why it’s called what it’s called.

I’ve heard good things about Bartlett and my discriminating guest says his play Earthquakes In London was much better. This comedy is certainly well-constructed and thanks to a generally fine cast (even the weakest performance isn’t that bad) perfectly watchable. But when you show someone Cock, having them say “not bad” isn’t just faint praise; it’s positively deflating.

US unemployment aid applications stay at 370,000

(AP) ? The number of people seeking unemployment benefits was unchanged last week, suggesting steady gains in the job market.

The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly unemployment aid applications stayed at a seasonally adjusted 370,000, the same level as the previous week. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, fell for the second straight week, to 375,000.

Applications for benefits surged in April to a five-month high of 392,000. They have fallen back since then and are near the lowest levels in four years.

The decline suggests hiring could pick up in May after slumping in the previous two months. When applications drop below 375,000 a week, it generally suggests hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.

The unemployment rate has fallen from 9.1 percent in August to 8.1 percent last month. And employers have added a million jobs over the past five months.

The pace of hiring slowed sharply in March and April, to an average of 135,000 jobs per month. That raised fears that the job market is weakening.

But economists have cautioned that a warm winter led companies to move up some hiring and accelerate other activity that normally wouldn’t occur until spring. That gave the appearance that the economy had strengthened in January and February and weakened in early spring.

And temporary layoffs stemming from spring holidays likely pushed unemployment benefit applications higher in April, economists noted.

If applications stay where they are or fall further, job growth should pick up. The gains may not match those from earlier in the year, when the economy averaged 252,000 jobs per month from December through February. But several economists said they expect somewhere in the range of 150,000 to 200,000 new jobs each month.

A jump in job openings supports the notion of stronger hiring in the coming months. Employers advertised 3.74 million job openings in March, the most since July 2008. It usually takes one to three months for employers to fill openings.

Other signs suggest the economy is strengthening after its early spring lull.

Home construction rose to near a three-year high in April. And factory output has risen in three of the year’s first four months.

The gains, highlighted in data released Wednesday, suggest growth in the April-June quarter is off to a good start.

Consumers are also finally seeing some relief from high gas prices. The average price of a gallon of gas was $3.73 on Wednesday, according to AAA. That’s 18 cents less than a month ago.

So consumers should have more money for other purchases, which could also boost second-quarter growth and help lift hiring. Consumer spending drives roughly 70 percent of economic activity in the U.S.

Obama’s disappointing response to JPMorgan Chase

Even if he didn’t want to criticize Jamie Dimon, the president could have used the occasion of JPMorgan Chase’s $2 billion trading loss to come out squarely in favor of tougher financial regulation. He didn’t.

?JP Morgan is one of the best-managed banks there is. Jamie Dimon, the head of it, is one of the smartest bankers we got and they still lost $2 billion,? the President said on the television show ?The View,? which aired Tuesday, suggesting that a weaker bank might not have survived.

That was it.

Not a word about Jamie Dimon?s tireless campaign to eviscerate the Dodd-Frank financial reform bill; his loud and repeated charge that the Street?s near meltdown in 2008 didn?t warrant more financial regulation; his leadership of Wall Street?s brazen lobbying campaign to delay the Volcker Rule under Dodd-Frank, which is still delayed; and his efforts to make?that rule?meaningless by widening a loophole allowing banks to use commercial deposits to ?hedge? (that is, make offsetting bets) their derivative trades.

Nor any mention Dimon?s outrageous flaunting of Dodd-Frank and of the Volcker Rule by setting up a special division in the bank to make huge (and hugely profitable, when the bets paid off) derivative trades disguised as hedges. ?

Nor?Dimon?s dual role as both chairman and CEO of JPMorgan (frowned on my experts in corporate governance) for which he collected a whopping $23 million this year, and $23 million in 2010 and 2011 in addition to a $17 million bonus.

Even if Obama didn?t want to criticize Dimon, at the very least he could have used the occasion to come out squarely in favor of tougher financial regulation. It?s the perfect time for him to call for resurrecting the Glass-Steagall Act, of which the Volcker Rule ? with its giant loophole for hedges ? is a pale and inadequate substitute.

And for breaking up the biggest banks and setting a cap on their size, as the Dallas branch of the Federal Reserve recommended several weeks ago.

Wall Street?s biggest banks were too big to fail before the bailout. Now, led by JP Morgan Chase, they?re even bigger. ?Twenty years ago, the 10 largest banks on the Street held 10 percent of America?s total bank assets. Now they hold over 70 percent.

This would give Obama a perfect way to distinguish himself from Mitt Romney ? who has pledged to repeal Dodd-Frank altogether if he?s elected President, who has also been raking in more than $20 million a year through financial games, and who shares the same prevailing Wall Street view?of the economy as profits to be maximized while people are minimized (to Romney, corporations are people).

But the Obama campaign has so far chosen to attack Romney?s character rather than his place in the new American plutocracy, with ads highlighting the jobs that were lost when Romney, as head of Bain Capital, took over a Midwest steel company.

It?s the same personal attack Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry leveled at Romney. But Gingrich and Perry had little choice. They didn?t want to criticize the system that allowed Romney to do this because their party celebrates no-holds-barred free-market capitalism.

Obama does have a choice. He can assail Romney?s character but he can also take on the system that allows private-equity managers, as well as Wall Street?s biggest banks, to continue to make huge profits at the expense of average Americans. Romney is the poster-child for the excesses of that system, just as is Jamie Dimon and JPMorgan Chase. ??

We are still at the very early stages of the 2012 campaign. There?s still time for Obama to come out swinging ? not only at Romney but also at the system of which Romney is a part, and to base his campaign on policies that will make that system work for ordinary people. ?Let?s hope he does.

PFT: Ricky Williams doubts concussion/brain damage link

Houston Texans v New Orleans SaintsGetty Images

The NFL apparently has heard the concerns regarding the spoon-feeding of summaries, characterizations, and conclusions regarding the Saints bounty scandal to the media, in the hopes that the media will then spoon-feed without scrutiny that same information to the public.

Sorry, NFL, but I can?t and won?t do it.

As I?ve said a time or two, if the NFL is going to make this matter to public by accusing players of funding and receiving funds from a bounty system, I need raw evidence ? especially when there seems to be a disconnect between the raw evidence that has become available and the summaries, characterizations, and conclusions the NFL has disseminated.

That may change.? Sort of.

Judy Battista of the New York Times reports that, after the player appeals have concluded, the league may publicly release some evidence, ?with sources carefully masked.?? The league continues to be concerned that, if some sources are identified, players will be able to figure out who blew the whistle in 2011.

That?s a cop out.? Once the whistle has been blown and people start talking to the league not secretly but in response to direct questions from the league office, the importance of protecting the perceived ?snitch? evaporates.? Assuming former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has confessed to maintaining and funding a bounty system, he surely has told the NFL which players helped him set it up.? So why not release one of his statements or interviews?? He?s not the whistleblower, and he deserves no such protection.

The same goes for Joe Vitt and Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis and any other person who gave information not because they wanted to but because they had to.

Still, the league seems to be blurring the line between whistleblower and witness in order to justify giving those in the media inclined to not take what the league feeds us at face value something that can?t be properly and fully picked apart and put back together.

In the end, none of it may matter.? At some point, the NFLPA and/or the lawyers representing the suspended players will likely land in a forum that forces the NFL to release raw data and, no matter how hard the NFL tries to keep the information confidential, it eventually will be released in open court ? after a judge explains to the NFL?s lawyers that only the person who actually blew the whistle is entitled to any type of protection.

Even then, a case can be made that the person who blew the whistle isn?t entitled to full and complete anonymity, especially if that person had evidence that no other witness could provide.

Once again, we?re not a third-world country where witnesses testify behind a curtain.? At some point, every witness/whistleblower may need to be identified, and if retaliation occurs the persons who retaliate will be held accountable.

If that ever happens, hopefully the raw evidence to prove retaliation will be made available in that case, too.

Melanoma & Skin Cancer Awareness: What you need to know

If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

What is melanoma?

  • Melanoma is a cancer that begins in the melanocytes ? the cells that produce the skin coloring or pigment known as melanin. Melanin helps protect the deeper layers of the skin from the harmful effects of the sun.
  • Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, will account for more than 75,000 cases of skin cancer in 2012. It accounts for almost 9,000 of the nearly 12,000 skin cancer deaths each year.
  • Melanoma is almost always curable when it is found in its very early stages. ?The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 98 percent.

?

The risk for getting skin cancer is real.? The American Academy of Dermatology estimates one in five Americans will develop skin cancer.? Risk factors include:

  • Unprotected and/or excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds
  • Pale complexion (difficulty tanning, easily sunburned, natural red or blond hair color)
  • Occupational exposures to coal tar, pitch, creosote, arsenic compounds, or radium
  • You or other members of your family have had skin cancers
  • Multiple or unusual moles
  • Severe sunburns in the past
  • Any change on your skin, especially in the size or color of a mole, growth, or spot, or a new growth (even if it has no color)
  • Scaliness, oozing, bleeding, or change in the appearance of a bump or nodule
  • The spread of pigmentation (color) beyond its border, such as dark coloring that spreads past the edge of a mole or mark
  • A change in sensation, such as itchiness, tenderness, or pain

You can still exercise and enjoy the outdoors while using sun safety at the same time.

  • Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Look for shade, especially in the middle of the day when the sun?s rays are strongest. Practice the shadow rule and teach it to children. If your shadow is shorter than you, the sun?s rays are at their strongest.
  • Wear protective clothing when you are out in the sun. Choose comfortable clothes made of tightly woven fabrics that you cannot see through when held up to a light.
  • Use sunscreen and lip balm with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Apply a generous amount of sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours and after swimming, toweling dry, or sweating. Use sunscreen even on hazy or overcast days.
  • Cover your head with a wide-brimmed hat, shading your face, ears, and neck.
  • Wear sunglasses with 99% to 100% UV absorption to provide optimal protection for the eyes and the surrounding skin.
  • Avoid other sources of UV light. Tanning beds and sun lamps are dangerous. They also damage your skin in other ways.

?

?

How is skin cancer treated?

Treatment depends on the size, depth and location of the c?ncer.

  • Surgery ? cancerous mole removed
  • Radiation if surgery isn?t an option
  • Chemotherapy ? topical anti-cancer creams or systemic chemotherapy if c?ncer has spread
  • Biological therapy to stimulate the immune system to kill c?ncer cells

Roccat Savu

Don’t let yourself be fooled by the basic design of the Roccat Savu gaming mouse ($59.99 list). It doesn’t offer the tricked-out customization of the Mad Catz Cyborg M.M.O. 7 ($159 street, 3.5 stars), but it has significantly more function and personalization than the bare-bones SteelSeries Kinzu ($40 street, 3 stars), with an arsenal of programmable functions hidden up its sleeve and a light bar that can be set to any of 16.8 million colors.

Design
The Savu looks much like other black-clad gaming mice. It measures 1.3 by 2.8 by 4.7 inches (HWD), and weighs 3.2 ounces. The sides and thumb rest are textured with a special “No-Sweat” coating, which has a strange feel that falls somewhere between skateboard grip tape and a cat’s tongue. Though it takes a moment or two go get used to, you’ll soon forget that it feels weird, and instead be grateful for the always grippy surface.

The top of the mouse is covered with a more traditional soft-touch surface, and all of the black is accented with a pulsating light at the back bottom edge of the mouse, cycling through different colors when the mouse is plugged in and powered on. In the included driver software, you can select your choice of colors?up to 16.8 million, according to Roccat.

The Savu is equipped with traditional right and left-click, a clickable scroll wheel, and two thumb buttons. One of these is an EasyShift[+] button, which works in conjunction with the rest of the mouse buttons to add programmable macro functions, effectively doubling the number of button functions.

Features and Performance
The Savu also has a comprehensive driver app, letting you set macro functions, adjust the light bar color, and customize your experience. But Roccat throws in a new feature for the trophy-obsessed, Roccat Achievement Display (or R.A.D.) which tracks everything from the number of button clicks to the total distance your mouse has travelled, and rewards gamers that hit certain (sometimes literal) milestones. If you’re so inclined, you can even share your mousing accomplishments with others through Facebook.

The Savu is equipped with a Pro-Optic R3 sensor, which Roccat claims is the world’s first 4000 DPI optical sensor?though we did see a 6000 DPI laser sensor on the Editors’ Choice Gigabyte M8000Xtreme Mouse ($59.99 list, 4.5 stars). The Savu is also adjustable to rates of 400, 800, 1600 and 4000 DPI, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find your sweet spot. Roccat also claims a polling rate of up to 1000 Hz, but they’re being modest here?when we tested it with MouseRate, the number was closer to 1300 Hz.

As with all of our gaming peripherals, the Savu was tested on the battlefield as well as in the lab, and for most games, it kept us shooting and fragging without so much as a hiccup. However, in game, using the EasyShift[+] button to access extra functions took some real adjustment. Even for someone used to using thumb buttons, the two-step clicking was difficult to wrap my head around. It definitely adds a learning curve to what is otherwise a straightforward mouse.

The Roccat Savu is a well-built mouse with a surprisingly long list of features, like a grip that won’t let go, a 4000 DPI sensor, and an array of programmable functions. Unfortunately, using the EasyShift[+] button to access these functions is a chore, and no amount of click-counting and distance tracking makes up for the resultant clunkiness. Ignore the extra functions and it becomes a solid (but basic) gaming mouse, but you’ll probably be better off with our Editors’ Choice Gigabyte M8000Xtreme Mouse.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Roccat Savu with several other computer mice side by side.

Data Killer turns hard drives into blank slates with the push of a button (video)

Image

Let’s say you’re embroiled in an international tale of espionage and intrigue, and you’ve got hard drives filled with incriminating evidence and top secret information. You could dispose of that potentially dangerous data by manually wiping each disk with multiple passes of a disk erasing app or, you could pop them in the Data Killer and be done with it in seconds. Platform of Japan demonstrated the information obliterating devices at the Information Security Expo. A large powerful magnet realigns the bits on the surface of the drive’s platters eliminating all trace of the data that existed before, without physically damaging the hardware. With just the push of a button a Data Killer can wipe practically any magnetic media, including tapes or an aging floppy disk. The data disposals even come in different sizes, allowing you to kill just a single 3.5-inch disk or up to 14 at a time. The larger models can even accept an intact laptop. Check out the video after the break to see it in action.

Arduino mechs learn RobotC, plot assimilation with Lego Mindstorms

RobotC-Public-Beta-on-Arduino

Arduino boards have smoothed the creation of lots of eccentric thingamajigs, but robotics and controllers are still not for the faint of heart. Luckily, RoboMatter is coming to the rescue of would-be roboticists with a public beta version of its C-based RobotC language for Arduino. Joining Lego Mindstorm and other bots, Arduino will get RobotC’s straightforward sensor and motor controls, along with a debugger and sample program library, while still keeping its native Wiring language. So, if you want to be a Kickstarter magnate , or just out-weird everyone else, rolling your own droid is now a bit easier.
